Most towboats pushing barges on the Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers have a crew of 8-12 people, including a captain/pilot, an engineer, a cook, and deckhands. Towboat crews typically have “six hours on, six hours off” shifts – resulting in a twelve hour work day. A towboat and crew can often be deployed for 20-30 days. Upon return to its base of operations, the crew will often have 20-30 days off before being deployed again. |
