Did You Know? An ice gorge is the accumulation of ice obstructing the flow of water, particularly on a river. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Mississippi River froze completely in St. Louis at least 10 times between 1831 and 1938. The river no longer froze completely at St. Louis following the completion of a lock and dam in Alton, Illinois — 24 miles to the north.
