Did you Know? What are Class I, Class II, and Class III railroads?
- Class I Railroad – a railroad with an operating revenue exceeding $433.2 million. Seven Class I railroads operate in the United States: Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, CSX Transportation, Grand Trunk Corporation (subsidiary of Canadian National Railway), Kansas City Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern Railway, Soo Line Corporation (subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Railway), and Union Pacific Railroad.
- Class II Railroad – often called a “regional railroad.” Class II railroads have operating revenues between $37.4 million and $433.2 million.
- Class III Railroad – often called a “short line railroad.” Class III railroads have operating revenues of $37.4 million or less.
